About PATH

Frustrated about healthcare, a group of citizens who live in western Wisconsin decided to form an organization devoted to seeking facts and truth regarding healthcare and health insurance and making truthful information available to candidates for office, office holders, and the public. In forming PATH (Public Access to Healthcare), we decided to focus primarily on Wisconsin but also note important healthcare issues affecting the rest of the U.S.

All of us are among the lucky ones: we all have health insurance. Yet all of us have experienced confusion, distress, and anger regarding the high costs of our healthcare and the lack of transparency about most aspects of healthcare, including its costs to us, its actual costs to providers, the costs of insurance, and the difficulty in comparing these costs and in obtaining accurate information regarding health insurance coverage. In addition, many of us have found that keeping up with the many bills, statements, explanations of benefits, and other healthcare-related paperwork to be burdensome. Dealing directly with insurance companies when they deny coverage, require prior authorizations, or invoke “out of network” providers as reasons for refusing to pay has caused some of us high levels of anxiety.

And we wondered, if we are the lucky ones, how much more difficult must it be for those who have no insurance?

We therefore seek to provide both facts and truth. We aim to provide facts regarding the items mentioned above as well as truthful conclusions about healthcare and health insurance—that is, conclusions based on careful research and evidence rather than on whim, party politics, or a desire to believe.

In addition to providing health care consumers with facts and truth, we aim to offer truthful information to voters and candidates for public office. We wish to promote accountability, transparency, and accuracy among healthcare providers, health insurance companies, and makers of public healthcare policy. Ultimately, we hope to increase Americans’ access to affordable health care and prescription medications.
